Day 49 – A Day Off Following Disaster And Bike and Trike Outlet of Omaha

Today is Art’s usual day off. And thanks to a wonderful bike shop which jumped in to help Our Hero in this emergency, he is ready to roll on Friday! Thank you, Bike and Trike Outlet of Omaha! And much appreciation for the fast and friendly service you provided!

Art and Cindy didn’t waste the day. They paid a visit to two places. The first was the historic Old Town Market, located close to downtown Omaha. Wow, more Halloween! And I’m not referring to Art and Cindy, in case you couldn’t tell – LOL:

This appears to be a haunted tour building. Fun!

They also saw this mural, and we get Cindy’s beautiful smile, too:

Next was a visit to the Mormon Trail Center at Winter Quarters. For those who do not know the history, the early Mormon church was being persecuted in Nauvoo, Illinois, and the governor of Illinois at the time, Thomas Ford, ordered the Prophet, Joseph Smith, to turn himself in. It was then that he, along with this brother, Hyrum, were murdered by a mob. The Mormons, referred to as Saints based on the full name of the church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had no choice but to leave the state to avoid being murdered by mobs, themselves. Later, the governor of Missouri, Lilburn Boggs, ordered a “Mormon Extermination Order” forcing them to run for their lives yet again. The Mormon Trail Center at Winter Quarters near Omaha, Nebraska, was formed to teach the history of the Saint’s travels to a place they could practice their faith unrestrained by prejudice by others. This is not an uncommon fate of Christians throughout the world, even today, as we well know. Members gathered at Winter Quarters in 1846-1848. The site was a busy town, organized with housing and administrative committees. However, there were food shortages and inadequate housing for the numbers, which resulted in disease that caused over six hundred deaths. Yet, this location was a vital staging point to help the Saints as they traveled to Salt Lake City and the freedom to worship that they finally found. The bulk of the trek to Salt Lake occurred in 1847. Now, Winter Quarters has a Temple that stands on the historic site.

Here is the sculpture depicting the hardship of the journey for many Saints. It shows the handcarts used by many families to make the trek. The Saints were the only pioneers to travel using this particular vehicle. And we have a smiling Cindy in the photo, too!:

A little history for you. A little relief on the faces of Art and Cindy after all the help from Bike and Trike Outlet of Omaha.

And for a freebie story I wrote years ago, War From the View of Mother Earth, on Spillwords, which I can’t get to embed properly for some reason, so enter my name in the search bar at Spillwords:

My Amazon page is more updated than Goodreads, but while I’m recovering from the toe debacle, I’ll be updating both sites soon.

I’m getting pretty good at it except they’re always seems to be a small issue. Yesterday the water hose wouldn’t stop leaking. Art was able to fix it when he got to our spot.
