Journey of a Lifetime

Yesterday was the day. Yes, the day two young, white-haired, sixty-five-year-old, handsome, brave souls began their Journey of a Lifetime. It all started here:

La Push Beach, Washington state, United States of America. But now see how Art runs from the water. Our hero! LOL

They not only got the back tires wet, but their front, their feet…you get the picture. I tried to get them to ride their bikes in the sand, you know, for laughs. They both refused. But I have great plans for the final photo in this series.

Notice Art has no helmet. He was sure he must have forgotten it at home, in his living room in Colorado Springs. Today, he found it in his saddlebag on the bike – after he’d gone and bought a new one! LOL. It was exhaustion. We had been traveling for thirteen hours or so the previous day, spent the night in a rest area due to some unforeseen issues on The Money Pit…I mean, the RV. After waiting in the Walmart parking lot that was thirty minutes away until check-in time, we proceeded to our RV Park. It was not a restful night. They were anxious to get started despite being tired. Twenty-five miles clocked in on day one, a day earlier than planned.

Don’t think Jay didn’t have his issues. He was chilled. We traveled from ninety-degree Fahrenheit weather to sixty degrees with fog and light drizzle. He neglected to take a rain jacket. Or any jacket at all. I had to remind him twice to grab something to eat in case he had a sugar low or got tired. This morning, I told him twice to grab his rain jacket and put it on so he wouldn’t forget. It made it out the door today.

And there they go to start the ride:

Let me say this is no easy task. These guys are working hard, but look at what they’ve been able to see:

Beautiful driftwood covered the beach. The shells were all cleaned out as we got there late in the day.

The trees are so dense here. Much more so than in Colorado. In most places, you can’t even see into the trees. Even where houses or businesses are on a street beyond those lining the road, you cannot see them. At one point, I spotted three elk in the trees by the road and turned around to grab a picture. They were so fast, all I got were two of the rear ends!

And this was our first look at the Pacific Ocean, as it was for all four dogs, all terrified of the water (like Art was – LOL).

It was exciting to drive up and see the ocean through the trees, then walk out on the rocks and on down to the beach.

Next up: Day two of the bike ride and, hopefully, a second post about our Money Pit issues the day before arrival that caused us to have to sleep at the rest area. Fun Times!

  1. best of luck, boys! It’s going to be the adventure of a lifetime. I know parts of it are gonna be hard, but you are going to see some beautiful country. I’m a little jealous.

    1. Hi Karen. I will pass this on to Art. So far, the weather has been pretty good, but for some heavy rain one day and sprinkles on another upcoming post that I’ll mention.
