Day 75 – Rider’s Day off and Day 76 – Thursday – What’s With All The Peanuts?

Our Hero continues his riding at a more leisurely pace. And while he rode fifty-four miles today, the land was pretty flat. He gained only 577 feet in elevation.

As you know, Georgia was the home of our 39th President, Jimmy Carter, serving back in the olden days 😉 of 1977 to 1981. He had been a peanut farmer. That’s just a bit of history to later answer the title question.

First, Art passed this unnamed tributary to Lake Chehaw:

The rest of the view on this ride was typical, as in this photo below:

The interesting part? Peanuts. Everywhere:

And suddenly, peanuts and cotton balls?????:

Fun fact – Jay freaks out over cotton balls (and styrofoam). It gives him the heebies jeebies! He can’t even remove cotton from a pill bottle. I have to do it for him – LOL.

There is a reason for all the peanuts along the road, though. I have no explanation for the cotton balls….It’s not coming right off the crops.

President Carter’s country is also Peanut country. Southern Georgia harvests and then ships its peanut crop by truck. The peanuts sometimes shake loose during transportation and end up along the roadside. And Georgia leads the U.S. in peanut production, accounting for almost half of the total crop. The soil there is perfect for growing, as it’s sandy, and the climate is subtropical. Thus, Our Hero saw a lot of peanuts on this ride.

He also passed this cotton field:

He told me, “I’m just having a cotton-picking good time today!” Yet another dad joke, courtesy of Art Hurst. LOL.

Next Up: Day 77 – Friday is Hello, Florida!
