Let me start by saying this has been a grueling trip, especially for Art, but also for me. I have some health issues, and had heart surgery six days before we left, much to the upset of my heart doctor. He wanted me there until September. It was an ablation for atrial fibrillation (a-fib). And, sadly, it did not take. I continue to experience a-fib episodes. Once the ride is over, we’ll return to Colorado, and I will follow up with him.
At the beginning of the ride, we planned to take Thursdays and Sundays off from riding. We follow that as closely as possible. So this past Thursday, Our Hero, Art, took the day off to rest. A well-needed one.
I had to see a joint and bone doctor about an issue with my second toe on my right foot. My second toes are longer than my big toe, and obviously, all the others. Arthritis has affected my feet, and both second toes have bent over at the first joint. First on the left and now on the right. When walking, I’m walking on the tip of that toe rather than the bottom. Ultimately, this causes an infection. And as a diabetic, the resolution is sometimes the removal of the digit. The tip of my left toe had to be removed as the infection wouldn’t resolve, and we couldn’t get approval for a hammer toe surgery from insurance. The same has happened with my right foot. The surgeon thought he would have to take off the toe to the second joint, but by some miracle, that wasn’t necessary, and this toe only had to have the tip removed.
Why am I telling you all of this? Well, it’s put a wrench in the works. My surgery could not be put off without risking losing much more of my toe and even possibly my foot. Of course, the surgeon needs to follow up with me. Jay and I must stay put.
But don’t fret! I will continue to blog for Art as he sends photos and descriptions of his rides! And once Jay and I are on the move in an attempt to catch up, we’ll be checking places out to share, too.
Art took off Thursday, August 21st, Friday, August 22nd, Sunday, August 24th, Monday, August 25th, and Tuesday, August 26th. He’s riding again today.
So here’s the big news: Art and Cindy bought a little NuCamp TAB 400 camper of their own to continue the trip in! These last few days have been a whirlwind as Cindy flew back to Colorado for their minivan, drove back here to Missoula, Montana, she and Art went shopping around, and finally found the perfect camper for them! Photos will follow soon. In the meantime, stick with us! Art will send me photos and descriptions of his rides, and I’ll continue to blog about them. You don’t want to miss this continued journey of a lifetime! Plus, as soon as we have the okay from my surgeon, we’re off to South Dakota with a couple days in Billings, Montana at a battlefield…
