Why Hummingbirds?

When I met my husband we discussed our love of Colorado, our experiences growing up, and all those things you discuss when getting to know each other. He told me a story about a hummingbird. He was camping and pulled his sleeping bag outside to sleep under the stars. When he awoke that morning, there was a hummingbird fluttering inches from his nose! He was fascinated by it and it was a memory of a lifetime. That was our first discussion about these amazing little birds.

We married on July 4th, 1994 in Estes Park, Colorado. That was the first time, anyway. We’ve actually been married three times. Our Estes Park wedding was before a Justice of the Peace with my parents as our witnesses. I’ve always said he was the only man that made me see fireworks! Jay started a new job as a truck driver the next day. I guess I owe an explanation about the three weddings comment now….

We had paid for most of our wedding before Jay found himself struggling to find a job and so we found it necessary for him to move in with me as he couldn’t continue to pay for his apartment. So we went to Estes Park. But we didn’t want to waste the down payment on the location, the cost of my wedding dress, which I had not worn for the July 4th wedding, or any of the other items we had already prepared for the planned October 8th wedding. We remarried on October 8th with friends and family present and took our planned and paid-for honeymoon then. Where did we go? Estes Park, Colorado. It’s one of my favorite places in Colorado. It was here that we had our next encounter with hummingbirds.

We rented a cabin and found the deer in the area would approach to be fed. Every morning, we woke to them walking around our cabin, grazing in the grass. We also woke to several hummingbird feeders hanging on the porch absolutely filled with hummingbirds. They were everywhere. And that sealed the deal. We bought a blown glass hummingbird at a local shop. And over the years, we picked up a couple of small hummingbird items. When we decided to buy our 5th wheel, we wanted to name it like all the other people we watched on YouTube named their own rigs. We went through a lot of names but while I was packing us up and wrapping our hummingbird items, it occurred to me that we had the perfect name – Hummingbird Express. Calling this blog On Hummingbirds Wings made sense – we travel on our Hummingbird Express, thus its wings.

The above item hangs in our RV when we’re parked but comes down for protection when we travel. After thirty years, it stills stands as a precious item bringing good memories to us.
